On January 25, 2011, the Superintendent released the latest revision of the Network Security Standards. This revision supersedes the previous version, released in 2008.

  • The document provides the standards which all District computer users must follow when utilizing any part of the M-DCPS computer system.
  • The Standards apply to all users and all equipment connected to the network, including personally owned equipment.
  • The Superintendent's cover memo highlights some of the technical changes. These changes include the following:
    • Servers running Windows NT are not to be connected to the network due to their vulnerabilities.
    • There is a warning that the NEOLA Board Rule project currently underway will change Board Rule numbers referred to in the document.
    • Site supervisors should ensure that copier vendors that are removing copier/fax/scanner equipment for the premises clear or remove and leave hard drives from inside the equipment that may contain confidential information on document images.
    • Lost or stolen Blackberries must be reported immediately to ITS via HEAT so they can be wiped remotely.
    • Users are responsible for backing up data they keep on their desktop, My Documents, etc. This data is not included in network backups.
    • All staff, particularly teachers, are warned of the risk in not logging off, locking the computer, or turning off the timeout feature. Not only Gradebook and e-mail information becomes vulnerable, but also the staff member's personal HR information is put at risk.
  • Site supervisors should review this document with their technician(S). In addition, sections 5.0 (Staff Security Responsibilities) and 5.1 (User-ids and Passwords) contain information that all District users should know. Site supervisors should make this information available to their staff.
  • The Network Security Standards can be found at:
  • Should you have any questions regarding this document, please submit them via HEAT Self Service and you will be contacted by an ITS representative.
